아이들의 영어 독서 베스트 책 100권 살펴보기
The 100 Great Books.
미국의 시카고 대학교는 전 세계에서 노벨상 수상자를 가장 많이 배출한 명문 대학교로, 공부를 가장 많이 시키기로 유명합니다. 이 대학교가 공부를 많이 시킨다고 알려진 이유는 학부 과정 중에 100권의 고전을 읽어야 하기 때문입니다. 이것이 바로 널리 알려진 로버트 허친스 (Robert Hutchins) 충장의충장의 ‘시카고 플랜(Chicago Plan)’으로, 이 학교에서 선정한 100권의 고전은 ‘The Great Books’로 불립니다. 이에 자극받아 올해 초부터 키즈엔 리딩 리딩 연구소와 전국의 원장들은 오랜 시간 동안 영어 독서로 그 실력을 다져온 아이들이 읽으면 좋을 ‘The 100 Great Books’를 선정하기 위해 노력해왔습니다. 원장들이 직접 읽은 책들도 추천하고, 자료도 조사하면서 여러 번의 회의를 거쳐 드디어 7월에 100권의 책을 선정했습니다. 엄마표 영어를 오랫동안 해서 레벨이 높은 아이들이 도전해볼 만한 리딩 레벨 4~10점대의 고전, 뉴베리 수상작, 뉴욕타임스 스테디셀러 등 다양한 종류의 책들입니다. 초등 고학년부터 중학교 아이들이 읽으면 좋을 재미와 감동, 깊이 있는 사고를 가능하게 하는 픽션(fiction) 78권, 논픽션(nonfiction) 22권을 선정했습니다. 유명한 책들이라도 너무 어둡거나 아이들이 읽기에 부적절한 내용을 다루는 것들은 제외했습니다.
리딩 레벨이 높은 아이들에게 어떤 책을 추천해야 할지 어려워하는 경우가 많기에, 이 리스트가 도움이 되리라 생각합니다. 모든 책에 리딩 레벨이 매겨져 있는 것은 아니므로 리스트 중에 리딩 레벨이 빠져 있는 책들도 있습니다.
